Power from Peelings: How Our Biodigester Turns Food Waste into Hotel Energy

What if last night’s vegetable trimmings could help warm your room today? That’s the promise of Power from Peelings at De Zeeuwse Stromen in Renesse. Our on-site biodigester transforms vegetable, fruit, and food waste into renewable biogas and high-quality plant food, making it possible to heat hotel rooms and other areas with energy created from leftovers. In this post, you’ll learn how the system works, where the energy goes, and how you can participate during your stay.

What is a biodigester?

A biodigester is a closed system that breaks down organic matter—such as fruit skins, vegetable scraps, and plate leftovers—into two useful outputs:

In everyday terms, it’s like a personal power plant that runs on peels and plate waste. By using natural biological processes, biodigesters offer a reliable, circular way to recover value from materials that would otherwise be thrown away.

From plate to power: the De Zeeuwse Stromen loop

At De Zeeuwse Stromen, sustainability is a thread that runs through our operations. Since reopening in 1997, we’ve chosen approaches that make as little nuisance to nature as possible. Our biodigester is a cornerstone of that commitment.

Here’s the simple journey from leftovers to low-impact comfort:

  1. Separation: Vegetable, fruit, and food waste (GFE) is sorted at the source.
  2. Digestion: The biodigester converts this waste into biogas and plant food.
  3. Use: The biogas provides renewable heat for our hotel rooms and other areas.
  4. Return: The plant food contributes value back to nature.

This circular loop reduces dependence on fossil fuels while turning everyday waste into a resource for guest comfort.

A structured view of our circular energy loop

Stage Input Process Output Where it’s used
1. Collection GFE (vegetable, fruit, and food waste) Waste separation Clean organic feedstock Biodigester input
2. Digestion Organic feedstock Anaerobic breakdown Renewable biogas + plant food On-site energy + nature benefit
3. Utilization Biogas Heat generation Space heating Hotel rooms and other areas

Where the heat goes: rooms, pools, and more

Biogas from our biodigester is used to heat hotel rooms and other spaces in the main building. It’s one part of a broader approach to energy that includes additional systems designed to capture and reuse heat.

Central cooling system with heat recovery

Cooling processes—like fridges and freezer units—release heat. Instead of wasting it, our building’s heat exchanger captures this released heat and uses it to pleasantly heat the water of both our indoor and outdoor pools. The result: a smarter, more circular building energy balance.

Solar thermal panels: tapping Zeeland’s sunshine

To further reduce gas consumption, the hotel roof hosts 40 solar thermal panels. These panels collect solar energy to help heat water, stored in a buffer of 4 × 1,000 liters. Thanks to these panels, we save an average of 50,000 to 60,000 m³ of gas every year, making the most of the fact that the province of Zeeland has, on average, the most hours of sunshine in the Netherlands.

Why Power from Peelings matters

Designed for savings: lighting, controls, and smart choices

Our energy approach goes beyond generation to include thoughtful ways of reducing demand:

These steps add up to a smarter, more efficient stay—without sacrificing comfort.

Certified commitment: Green Key Gold and CSR in action

De Zeeuwse Stromen holds the Green Key Gold seal—an international hallmark indicating we do more for sustainability than the law requires, while maintaining guest comfort and quality. Our broader program includes:

Together, these measures demonstrate a sustained, hotel‑wide commitment that complements the biodigester and energy systems.

Practical takeaways: how guests can participate
