Rebooting ‘De Stroming’: Bringing Our House Newspaper Back to Life
If you love real stories from inside a hotel by the sea, you’ll love our reboot of De Stroming. Rebooting ‘De Stroming’ is our way of bringing back a beloved house newspaper—rooted in tradition, updated for today. After reviving De Stroming in November 2022 and releasing a digital jubilee edition in early 2023, Hotel-Congrescentrum De Zeeuwse Stromen is once again opening the pages to behind-the-scenes life, shared memories, and the people who make hospitality feel like home.
In this article, you’ll discover what De Stroming is, why it mattered to our guests and team for decades, why we chose to bring it back, and what you can expect from the new edition—plus practical ways to dive in.
What is De Stroming?
A tabloid with a personal touch
De Stroming is our in-house tabloid newspaper that offered guests, followers, and suppliers a look behind the scenes at our hotel-congress centre in Renesse. Published annually until 2010, it was brimming with anecdotes, recipes, and interviews with suppliers—capturing the everyday energy of a seaside hotel where there’s truly “never a dull day.”
Why 10,000 copies were hand-folded
Former colleagues still recall how at least 10,000 copies were hand-folded and mailed. That hands-on approach wasn’t just logistics—it reflected the spirit of De Stroming itself: personal, crafted with care, and shared widely with our community.
Why reboot De Stroming now?
A silver jubilee worth writing about
July 2022 marked 25 years since we reopened our doors on 12 July 1997, following the 1996 fire. As a family business with a rich history dating back to 1959—when we first opened as “Vacantie-Motel De Zeeuwse Stromen”—a silver jubilee was the perfect moment to reflect. In November 2022 we decided to revive De Stroming, and on 3 February 2023 we brought out a digital jubilee edition. The milestone called for stories: not just a timeline, but the lived experience of a team and place that have been “always in motion—sometimes with the waves, sometimes against the current.”
Never a dull day: life behind a hotel-congresscentrum
Running a hotel-congress centre brings delightful challenges every single day—from welcoming business gatherings to curating dining that’s both culinary and circular. De Stroming shines a light on this daily rhythm, the questions we wrestle with, and the solutions we build together.
What to expect from the new edition
The heart of De Stroming hasn’t changed. Expect the familiar pillars—brought into the present.
- Behind the scenes: Get a candid look at the operational heartbeat of a four-star coastal property. Think processes, teamwork, and the craftsmanship that turns complexity into comfort.
- People & partners: Meet the colleagues and suppliers who shape guest experiences—from our CongresCoach to long-standing partners. These are the voices that give the hotel its character.
- Culinary & circular: Explore how culinarity and circularity go hand in hand at De Zeeuwse Stromen. For example, the liqueur Orangecello (Dik & Schil) on our drinks menu is made from orange peels saved from our fresh juice, and the filling of our oyster mushroom croquettes is grown on our collected coffee grounds through our partner network. We do it because we can. But we can because we do it!
- Sustainable operations: Discover how our building’s central cooling system captures heat released by cooling processes and uses a heat exchanger to pleasantly warm both our indoor and outdoor pools. It’s practical sustainability you can literally swim in.
- Meetings by the sea: Since 1971, De Zeeuwse Stromen has been a place to organise meetings and training courses. Expect insights into what makes gatherings here productive and refreshing—from spaces to service.
- Coastal life in Renesse: Enjoy snapshots of the seaside setting just 300 metres from the coast—where nature, wellness, and local flavour set the tone for a stay.
From print to digital—sustainably
We once hand-folded thousands of copies; today, De Stroming also comes "off the digital press." The digital jubilee edition captures the spirit of the tabloid while making it even easier to read and share. Moving online aligns with our wider sustainability ambitions. Hotel-Congrescentrum De Zeeuwse Stromen proudly holds the Green Key Gold certification—the highest international eco-label for sustainable hotels and conference venues—and has done so since 2014. Embracing a digital edition helps us reduce materials while keeping the tradition alive.
A brief journey through time
- 1959: The hotel opens its doors as “Vacantie-Motel De Zeeuwse Stromen,” with a modest 16 double rooms (half with private shower and toilet), operating seasonally in the early years.
- 1969: We open year-round.
- 1971: Hosting meetings and training courses becomes part of our DNA.
- 1970s: 34 rooms are added to meet growing demand.
- 1996–1997: After the 1996 fire, we reopen on 12 July 1997.
- 2022: We celebrate 25 years since reopening—our silver jubilee.
- 2022–2023: We reboot De Stroming and publish a digital jubilee edition.
These milestones are more than dates. They’re chapters—each with the stories, recipes, and relationships De Stroming was made to preserve.
